Taking the leap to try an unconventional “gym”, in a block warehouse, was the best decision I have ever made. I was a soccer player from the age of 4 and through college. Once I graduated I was unsatisfied with my boring workout regimen, running miles alone and having no coach or teammates around to push me, I needed something different. I knew nothing about this gym called PSKC, but I knew there were people having LOTS of fun and working out in a totally different way than I was familiar with. I was encouraged by a couple ladies who worked out there, to contact Dale, the owner, about taking the intro class. So I did! Dale was not overly eager and gave no sales pitch, but he said “come down and check it out”. I was intimidated and unsure how I would like it, since I had never lifted weights, knew nothing about how to lift weights, and I definitely did NOT want to “get bulky”. I was only looking to sweat and get my heart pumping. What I received from this place was so much more than I could have ever dreamed.
First of all, Dale turned out to be an awesome Coach & friend! Even though he didn’t give me a sales pitch as to why I should try his gym, and didn’t promote the million benefits, he is a wealth of knowledge and our biggest cheerleader. He has a confidence in your abilities before you ever realize it is there yourself. I’m blessed and thankful that God chose Dale to start PSKC, because it would not be the same without him at the forefront.
Second, my perception of lifting weights was totally wrong. I didn’t realize that women can lift weights and be strong and beautfiul. Lifting weights is not only for men, it’s for everyone! You don’t became the hulk from lifting a little weight, but rather strong, capable, and toned, what a great benefit to working out! The encouragement & teaching from the coaches was a great place to begin. It was not a place of people staring and judging, but rather fun, support, and hard work among friends. There was no certain body type, age, size, or skill level. It was a diverse atmosphere with coaches who truly care about our safety and technique with every single movement. I was hooked! I quickly learned what it felt like to do movements like a strict pull up and proper push ups, I was gaining confidence in a new way, and this is where I wanted to spend every day! I came here to simply exercise and sweat but PSKC has became my favorite place to spend my time and some of my best friends (more like family) are here. We laugh, scream, sweat, cry, dance, cheer, & mostly smile together every day. It is a place that can’t be explained unless you experience it! After 3 years of Crossift I became a Level 1 Crossfit Trainer and couldn’t be more blessed and happy to spread my passion and knowledge of fitness to anyone I’m able to! I look forward to being a part of the plans God has for the future of PSKC!!

Crossfit Level 1,
Growing up I lived for sports, if there was a ball involved count me in. The game I loved the most was basketball. There was just something about this game that every time I stepped on the court I wanted to go hard every single play. I always loved the opportunity to dive after a loose ball or being called upon to guard the best player. I was never the best athlete but I knew NO ONE would out work me, and I took great pride in that. After high school I tried feeling that void with all kinds of leagues and any pick up games I could find, never was the same. Fast forward 14 years later I found myself 270 pounds, and a heavy smoker. I knew in my heart at this point and time in my life there needed to be a change, I just didn’t know how.
“I stepped into PSKC thriving for something more. I had ended up as a college graduate who had tried every weight loss supplement and exercise class out there. PSKC fueled my fire and pushed my mind every way possible. PSKC has taught me about being healthy and how to be mentally tough. I now understand that I can handle anything that is thrown my way. The gym provides me ways to set new goals to make myself better mentally and physically. It also provides an awesome community of support. Everyone is always pushing and cheering for each other. We are a team and help each other every day. I have grown to love PSKC and it holds a special place in my heart. I have to say I am blessed to be around these awesome individuals daily.
My father coached for about 30 years during his teaching career. I was considered a “gym rat” at a young age. I followed in his footsteps and developed a love for sports. I played three sports in high school and advanced to the collegiate level in volleyball. From there, I always had the interest of helping people, especially kids. I volunteered at many college and high school sport camps and clinics. From there, I ended up coaching three Jr. High sports and now I am a current Varsity Volleyball Coach and first grade teacher at a local school. Over the past few years, I have developed a passion to see adults/teens/kids improve and accomplish things that they did not think were possible. The best part of being a coach is when the “light bulb” turns on and you see how much you have affected someone’s life. I am extremely excited to have been given the opportunity to coach young athletes at a place that has changed my life.”

“Born and raised in West Virginia! I went to undergrad at Marshall University and moved to Lexington, KY to attend THE University of Kentucky for graduate school. While there I fell in love…twice. The first was with my beautiful wife Nikki. We were married in 2010 and now have a wonderful daughter, Madilyn Grace. The second was with CrossFit. I was hooked from my very first Intro class. I hadn’t felt that type of competitiveness in a long time and couldn’t get enough! I trained at CrossFit Maximus in Lexington for two years. After graduate school we moved to my wife’s home town, South Shore, KY! I knew I had to find a place to continue CrossFitting. I found PSKC on the CrossFit mainsite and decided to stop in and check it out. It only took five minutes (at the old gym) to know this box, these people, this community was exactly what I was looking for. It was such a different environment than my previous “big” box. I was blown away by the sense of community/camaraderie I saw at PSKC. In December 2013 I was certified as a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and started coaching in January. I’m so excited to call PSKC my CrossFit home. Every day I get to see people from our community become stronger, healthier, happier and aware of their true potential.”

I’m the fortunate founder and proud owner of PSKC, President of Team Some Assembly Required , and co-owner of Doc Spartan. Born and raised in Portsmouth, I moved away to attend college and serve in the US Army. Upon leaving the military as a former US Army Captain and Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom III & IV, I came back home where I opened the doors to PSKC. Since that time, I’ve worked with and coached individuals ranging from all ages, abilities, disciplines, and backgrounds. I’ve trained high school and college level athletic teams, military units, and adaptive athletes.
When I’m not at PSKC, I can be found driving his dear wife crazy (who graciously allows him to spend time away from home at the gym), working on the growth of Doc Spartan, on the road with Team SAR, or playing with my best friends – Brutus and Koda our German Shepherd. I’m also a huge fan of hot coffee, cold beer, high fives, and laughs.

Born and raised in Natal, Brazil, I came to the US as a 17 year old exchange student with the hope of finding better opportunities. Ten years later I’ve learned to call the US my home. Along the way, I have been blessed with many special gifts and opportunities, one of them called PSKC.
Throughout my life, I’ve always been active. Playing all sorts of sports during school aged years, and later joining every fitness class out there. Unfortunately, I experienced the same end result…boredom. There was no feeling of accomplishment, no goals to achieve or mental obstacles to overcome. PSKC now provides that to me on a daily basis.
I’ve never been in better shape. I’m now equipped with the necessary tools to take part in events and do thing that I never believed were possible. Most importantly, I now know I can overcome any challenge life decides to throw my way.
My ultimate goal in life is to reach out and help others. Being a teacher in a public school, I have an awesome opportunity to develop kids into successful professionals and respectful adults. As a coach at PSKC, I have the awesome opportunity to help others believe they too can accomplish anything they put their heart into.
Editor’s Note: Mo is now the proud owner of the CrossFit Kids Program at PSKC equipping her to reach out and change lives for the better.
