I REFUSE TO DIE AN UNLIVED LIFE -Les Brown
About 5 years ago I wrote about Memento Mori on the original PSKC blog. It’s the only spreadsheet I keep in my office. It’s 52 blocks wide, 80 rows long. On the upper left is my birth date and all the way on the bottom left is a date 80 years in the future.
Since that time, I’ve been filling out my blocks. 5 years worth of columns are filled in – 5 blacked out lines, 260 weeks that I can’t get back. Days that have left and are now gone – blacked out blocks reminding me that each day I am closer to death
Memento Mori – We All Die
It’s my powerful visual reminder that today is the day to live – to create – to build – to love. To go to bed fulfilled but hungry for the next sunrise.
One of my favorite quotes that is actually scribbled on top of the paper is:
“The definition of hell – when you die you will meet the person you could have become.”
That statement has always haunted me because I saw men give their life so you and I could live a life worthy of that sacrifice. They didn’t die so I could become a government bureaucrat, they didn’t die so you could give up on your dreams. They didn’t die so you can walk away from your passion. You have a unique gift the world is starving to see, if you’re brave enough to offer it.
Just this morning I heard a more powerful analogy by Les Brown:
“Imagine if you will being on your death bed – And standing around your bed – the ghosts of the ideas, the dreams, the abilities, the talents given to you by life.
And that you for whatever reason, you never acted on those ideas, you never pursued that dream, you never used those talents, we never saw your leadership, you never used your voice, you never wrote that book.
And there they are standing around your bed looking at you with large angry eyes saying we came to you, and only you could have given us life! Now we must die with you forever.
The question is – if you die today what ideas, what dreams, what abilities, what talents, what gifts, would die with you? “
The ghosts come for those who cash in their dreams for comfort. Refuse to die an unlived life.
