Get To Know A Member: Shane Nunley

“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, nobody is gonna hit back hard as life… But it ain’t how hard you get hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

If you’re a Rocky fan you remember this scene very well. Rocky is teaching his son some very hard lessons about life. He is right life isn’t always “sunshine and rainbows”. This installment of “get to know a member” you will learn from member Shane Nunley that no matter how hard the hit is, you can get up and keep moving forward. Here is his story in his own words, it’s something everyone of us can learn from.

“So some of you may know and most probably do not that I am a widower. I lost my wife almost 4 years ago to breast cancer. I did not realize it until I spent some time at the gym that I was wallowing in self pity and making excuses for myself all the time.

Spending time everyday with encouraging, positive people made me realize that there is no easy path. Life is hard sometimes and I believe it is so you can get better and stronger. If an obstacle is put in your way it is easy to quit and make excuses but it is rewarding and amazing to fight through it and get better. No shortcuts, no excuses, just willpower and the never give up attitude that is contagious at PSKC. If you fail, great, you are still getting stronger everyday by continuing to fail and fighting on.

That attitude and effort is something that rubs off on people too. My two little boys can’t wait to got to kids class every chance they get because they love the coaches and my example has rubbed off on them.

So I guess what I am trying to say is thank you. To the members for encouraging me and always pushing yourselves. People notice effort and it pushes them to work harder. To the wonderful coaches and staff, you have a profound effect on people’s lives and your instructions and encouragement and work you do behind the scenes to make it all possible is amazing. So those days when you wonder if you are making a difference or not, you most certainly are.

I love this place and all the people in it. Keep hugging that struggle bus, you will be better for it.”
